Where do you work?
Web Applications UK

What is your role?
I work in the in-house Sales and Marketing team as a Junior Designer. Working with John Palowski - who is also a Shillington graduate - has been great because he has come from a similar background as me. Like me, he also decided to pursue a design career after graduating with a totally non-related degree! And because we have both undertaken the same course at Shillington, he understands and is aware of the skills that I have learnt and he is also aware of any skills that I may not have yet. I feel like John has already passed on a lot of new skills onto me since we started working together, especially in respect to designing for web.

Did you feel confident about entering the design industry after you graduated? Yes, definitely. I learnt so much at Shillington in such a short time. I really felt like I had all the essential skills that I needed to start a career as a designer and to be able to compete with all the university graduates. I also came out of the course with a portfolio that I am really proud of and felt confident sending out for job applications.

What were you doing before the course?
I had recently graduated from university with a degree in Mathematics!

Why did you decide to do the course?
Because I had always dreamed of being a designer and always enjoyed being creative but was always afraid that it wouldn’t be a stable career or that I didn’t have enough talent to make it in the industry. It wasn’t until I was nearing the end of my maths degree course that I started to really think about what I wanted to do with my life that I realised my passion wasn’t in a lifelong career in finance or anything maths related! My true passion is in design and I couldn’t think of anything else that I would like to do on a day-to-day basis. I am so glad that I found out about the graphic design course at Shillington as it has enabled me to follow my dreams.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Currently I am involved in designing a new company website from scratch. Probably the biggest and most challenging project that I have been a part of since starting the job. So far it has been an exciting experience and I have learnt a lot in terms of designing for the web and all the things that need to be considered when designing a website. Hopefully the design will be completed and rolled out soon.
