Where do you work?
Entyce Creative in Chester.
What is your role?
I'm a junior graphic designer and I'm involved with print, web, branding – everything basically.
Did you feel confident about entering the design industry after you graduated?
My final portfolio received fantastic praise from my classmates, lecturers and industry guests at the portfolio presentation evening, so I felt really confident. After a couple of successful interviews with design studios for work placements, my confidence was still on the up. A lot of the feedback has centred around how my conceptual and technical skills are beyond those of many university graduates.
What were you doing before the course?
I was working as a project manager for a design agency. I used to kick myself for not having the skills to move over to the creative side of the office! I had some basic skills in Photoshop and had used them to design some CD covers and posters for local bands and their upcoming gigs.
Why did you decide to do the course?
Graphic design has always been a hobby of mine and I wanted a job that would excite me every single working day – and it does!
What was the most valuable thing you took away from the course?
I couldn't pinpoint just one, there were so many. The guidance, knowledge and inspiration from the lecturers who have years of experience behind them. Also the fact that I could finally call myself a graphic designer – I felt part of a worthwhile trade and community.
Where do you see yourself 12 months from now?
I'm still settling into my current job so it's hard to say. I want to continue to gain valuable experience and play a key role in helping a studio grow from strength to strength.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Soon I'll have my first commercial logo out on view in Manchester City centre! It was my first freelance project after graduating, for a brand new digital media company which will be installing screens in and around the Printworks.
