Where do you work?
The Hallway Creative Agency

How long did it take you to find work?
Roughly three months from when I started applying properly.

When did you study at Shillington?
I studied the course part-time in 2009.

What were you doing before the course?
Working in the most dead-end job you can possibly imagine (not naming any names).

Why did you decide to do the course?
I'd had an interest in design since high school and studied industrial design at UNSW. I felt like graphic design was for me as I found myself working on my presentation layouts more than the actual content that went in them.

What was the most valuable thing you took away from the course?
An understanding of what looks good and what doesn't. I developed a keen eye and learned to appreciate the beauty in typography and clean design rather than just pretty pictures. Also, the idea that even the most minor detail can make or break a design.

How confident did you feel about entering the design industry after you graduated?
I was nervous about what it would all entail considering I had no prior experience but I was confident that I was well-equipped with all the tools I needed to get started as a junior designer.

Where do you see yourself in 12 months?
Hopefully still working at The Hallway. I feel very comfortable, in the zone and I get the design freedom that I'm sure many juniors wouldn't even dream of.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
After only a couple of weeks working at the agency I was asked to design an ad for a client of ours that would run in Sydney Morning Herald. This would be seen by thousands of readers. It was a tactical marketing play on Prime Minister Julia Gillard's red hair and would go on page 4 of the paper the day after the whole ordeal had happened, hopefully appearing directly under a related story. Everyone at the agency was really excited as the idea was great and the timing was perfect. The buzz in the office was awesome! Unfortunately the client backed out and pulled the ad at the very last minute! Would have been a great ad too, but these things happen!
