What is your current role?
I am now the Senior Designer at CLEO Magazine. My designs also get re-printed for other magazines around the world.
I am mainly responsible for page layout, still-life styling, and assisting/directing on photoshoots. And all those pretty makeup swatches you see…I do them!
When did you graduate?
May 2005.
Why did you want to be a graphic designer?
I was always very visual and arty, spending most of my senior years in high school in the art rooms. I knew that I wanted to do that for my career.
And why did you choose Shillington?
I was wondering how I could get into Graphic Design. I was really put off by a 3 year Uni degree, and to get into Tafe, you needed a portfolio. I didn’t understand how to get a portfolio together, when I hadn’t even learnt the programs yet. So I Googled Graphic Design courses, and after finding Shillington, I took myself to the open night. And, it felt like it was the right place for me.
What did you enjoy about the course?
Everything you learn in class is so practical. You are constantly at the computer and there is a lot of help throughout each exercise. Because the class sizes are small, you can ask questions, get help and not feel silly. Every brief was exciting and relevant to the current industry trends. So by the time you graduate, you’re left with a polished portfolio, a thorough knowledge of the programs as well as the confidence to pursue a good job.
I’ve met a lot of Shillington graduates along the way, and they seem SO much more the skilled, passionate and talented designers than anyone I have met who came out of Uni and Tafe!
And what do you love about your job?
So much! On top of designing all day I get to meet celebrities, sometimes get to be in the magazine and I go to some amazing parties and events!
When Sunday night rolls around, I’m not one of those people dreading Monday. I LOVE what I do, I am surrounded by people who inspire and encourage me. And every day I am thankful that I have a job I love.
Thanks Shillington for making me the designer I am today!
