At Shillington College the design portfolio is really what it's all about. Everything we teach technically is immediately put into practice with a commercially relevant brief, which then forms part of your portfolio. It's this final body of work that gives you the best possible chance of securing a position in the graphic design industry.
Starting with Adobe InDesign, the industry standard publishing tool, we instil the basics of the graphic design process. Each brief is structured to teach you something new, push the program you are exploring and to contribute to your final folio. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are introduced next, enabling you to integrate all three programs to produce more complex design solutions.
The design process includes lateral thinking, creating rough visuals, brainstorming, considering design principles, color and typography. The production process is also covered, including pre-press and printing methods.
As part of the college curriculum we invite leading specialist designers to give presentations of their work, and to provide insight into various areas of the design industry.
You will leave Shillington with a final portfolio package that will give you the confidence to apply for graphic design roles immediately after graduation.
