What is your role?
Junior Graphic Designer.
What sort of work are you doing?
Cheeky Pup Creative is a creative branding/design agency. They have a number of clients and fortunately it gives me the opportunity to work across different genres. I usually work on press ads, brochures, posters, banners and even fit-out designs. My role also involves finished art work and administration, ensuring that assets (images and photos supplied to the studio) are kept up to date and filed correctly.
What sort of deadlines do you work to?
The Studio will have a list of daily and weekly priorities. The Art Director will provide me with the hours allocated for design and finished art e.g. I will be given from two to four hours for concept work or I will get half a day to put together a press ad, which will require approval at least a day before it needs to be submitted to the newspaper.
What do you love about Graphic Design?
Working as a Graphic Designer means that every day is really different. I am surrounded by lovely artistic people, the role is diverse I get to listen to music while I work, I can wear jeans....so many things!
What do you find inspiring?
Color, nature, food and definitely MUSIC.
How has Shillington helped you gain employment?
Because the course was set up in a real studio environment, it meant that I was prepared to deal with deadlines. The way the course was structured gave me an overview of the different areas that I will be working in. They also had people from studios to paper suppliers who came in to give us an insight into the industry. Lastly, the preparation for interviews and the real expectations with regards to portfolios and job hunting was fantastic. I had a complete career change in less than six months, something that didnt sound achievable but it was.
