What is your current job?
Graphic Designer / Business Owner.
What sort of work are you doing?
I'm running my own little design business - it's just me at this stage but I've got loads of clients. I'm also freelancing at a magazine and at an agency one day a week to help pay the bills until my own business takes off. Most of the work for my direct clients is Corporate ID work - designing logos and stationery packages, and then all of the collateral that comes after that! Corporate ID is what I love designing so I've been really lucky!
What sort of deadlines do you work to?
Most of my clients are pretty good with deadlines but the freelance work that I do at the magazine is definitely 'churn and burn' work - thinking and working at lightening speed. (Thank goodness those keyboard shortcuts were drilled into us at Shillington).
What do you love about Graphic Design?
I love getting a client brief to design their Corporate ID. I know that I can design their entire profile with a strategically sound rationale (rather than just something 'pretty') and that, if it all goes well, this little mark that I've created will take on a life of it's own. I will get to see it on cards, signage, website, billboards, magazines....I love that the little things I create are out there in the world for others to see and interact with.
What do you find inspiring?
I find the work of Si Scott really inspirational. I'm very hands on and like to draw and sketch by hand first and he is just amazing! It;s often hard to believe that most of what he does is by hand. And Industrial Designer, Phillipe Stark. I just love his work...
How has Shillington helped you gain employment?
The reputation of Shillington has definitely helped me be a step ahead when I was seeking work at the magazine and the agency. They knew of Shillington and knew that I was going to be able to hit the ground running with technical skills, but at the same time, that I would have a really strong grasp of design theory.
