What is your current job?
Brand Coordinator
What sort of work are you doing?
Association of Surfing Professionals International (ASP) is the governing body of pro surfing. We have several world tours, and my job is to communicate the ASP brand effectively across all of them. My designs are the face of ASP so to speak. My job involves creating a new brand look for each year, (designed to meet our marketing objectives), and applying it across all platforms ... our website, print ads, our TV show, corporate ID, business documents everything! I get to apply our designs to some pretty cool things like surfboards, cars, DVD covers, magazine covers, event invites and t-shirts.
What sort of deadlines do you work to?
Very tight given that I don't just have to fit in with my own design schedule. To apply the design effectively across all parts of our organisation (we have ASP regional offices all over the world), I really need to fit in with everyone elses deadlines too, otherwise nothing's in sync.
What do you love about Graphic Design?
Listening to music and flicking through magazines is a legitimate part of the working process! Designing is a job where you can please people with your work because the outcome is always visible.
What do you find inspiring?
Magazines, music and other brands I guess. Monster Children, Lifelounge, Nixon and Quiksilver are a few of my favorites design-wise.
How has Shillington helped you gain employment?
Well I was already employed in a sponsorship and marketing kind of role. But after I did Shillington's three month course I was promoted to Brand Coordinator. It's great that now I can take those ideas I had bouncing around in my head, and communicate them visually as a campaign. Now that I can design in-house, we no longer need to outsource which is cost-effective for ASP and allows greater creative control too.
