What is your role?
Design & Publicity Assistant
What sort of work are you doing?
Because the company is more on the corporate side of things, I get to do a lot of clean designing. Everything from brochures, flyers, stickers and catalogues. One of the jobs that I have just recently helped finish is the design of panels for a showroom, which was used at a design expo. That really was a challenge but at the same time I enjoyed every minute of it.
What sort of deadlines do you work to?
Large projects and promotional events usually have a lot of work involved so we usually get 4 to 6 weeks. We also get really crazy deadlines which usually come up as, "Hey, Dan, I have an appointment with a client today, I need to get this presentation done in an hour!" So you have to be on your toes at all times. After graduating from Shillington I was used to tight deadlines!
What do you love about Graphic Design?
I really enjoy the type of work which I get involved in. Being able to design artwork which people appreciate is great. It also gives me a sense of achievement when my work is out there in public. Freedom and flexibility as a designer has always been a bonus, but one thing's for sure, and that is that design has never been work for me. It has always been fun and games.
What do you find inspiring?
I find works from Vince Frost really inspiring. The way in which he uses strong contrasts and his different way of thinking really pushes the boundaries of design. From packaging to book covers.
How has Shillington helped you gain employment?
The Shillington team has helped me gain employment by teaching me the 'ins and outs' of the interview process and they helped me produce an awesome portfolio. They have also given me the computer design skills to enable me to work and keep up with the pace in a real work environment. Their guidance and one on one style teaching has really given me the confidence that has boosted me to where I am now. Thanks again team! Go Bauhaus!
