Employment

At Shillington College we believe the design portfolio is paramount.
Everything that’s taught leads to a commercially relevant brief, which then forms part of your portfolio and gives you the best possible chance of securing a position in the graphic design industry.
Starting with InDesign, the Adobe publishing tool that is the design industry standard, we instil the basics of the graphic design process. Each brief is structured to teach you something new, push the program you are exploring and to contribute to your final portfolio. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are introduced subsequently, enabling you to integrate all three programs to produce more complex design solutions.
The design process includes lateral thinking, creating rough visuals, brainstorming, considering design principles, colour and typography. The production process is also covered and includes pre-press and printing methods.
As part of the college curriculum we invite leading specialist designers to give presentations of their work, to provide insight into various areas of the design industry.
You will also have a complete printed portfolio ready for presentation in your interviews and a digital portfolio for promoting yourself.
This final portfolio package gives you the confidence to apply for graphic design roles immediately after graduation.
